Childhood Milestones (The Important Ones)

Throughout my mommy career, there have been certain milestones that my kids have reached that have made me say to myself, "Dang.  That just made my life a lot easier."  These milestones include things like the kids (finally) sleeping through the night, or (finally) holding their own bottle, or (finally) using the potty.

But there are other milestones out there.  Less appreciated milestones.

I wish I could share how old my kids were when they started doing all these things, but I can't because I don't remember.  That's the trouble with underappreciated milestones.  They just slip quietly by, without any hoopla or big production.

Which is why I think it's high time that they be given their due.

5 Underappreciated Childhood Milestones That Make A Mom's Life Hella Easier

1.  Sitting Through an Entire Movie

Hello!  Who doesn't love the blissful moment when you realize your child has remained quietly occupied for 1.75+ hours??  For Ashley, it was Elmo in Grouchland that brought on this momentous occasion.  Ah, Elmo, my furry little friend.  I miss you.

2.  Eating a Hot Dog in a Bun

The moment that you no longer have to slice up hotdogs into itty bitty pieces is a HUGE milestone.  Going to a picnic?  Wondering how you're gonna slice up that dog on the fly?  No more worries.  Just throw that puppy in a bun, hand it off to your kiddo and you're good to go.  Love it.

3.  Learning to Pump Their Legs on the Swings

This one is HUGE.  HUUUUUUUUUGE.  No more pushing on the swings!!  Do you hear me?  No more pushing on the swings!!  You can just drink your coffee and watch!  The freedom!!!  It's incredible.

4.  Being Able to Open the Refrigerator Door

Kid:  "Mommy, I want a cheese stick."

Me:  "Well, go get one."

Kid:  "Okay."

Me:  "And while you're there, will you grab me a Diet Coke?"

Need I say more?

5.  Playing in the Backyard by Themselves

Oh, this one is awesome.  The kids want to go outside.  It's [hot] [cold] [snowy] [muddy] [something really good is on tv].   What to do, what to do...  Well, I'll tell you what to do!  You open the door and ship 'em on out!  It's that easy!  (Disclaimer:  fence recommended.)

So, what did I miss?  What other nontraditional milestones are out there that have made your life as a mama easier?

haha love these! unfortunately I've got some kiddies that haven't reached them yet. I do think the opening the fridge door is a mixed blessing - yeah, sure, they can get their own snack, but oh did I mention they just poked the tops of all the eggs too? (true story)
I like the teeth brushing on their own - hate "helping" them with this task.

I almost jumped for joy when my boys learnt to feed themselves!

And them being able to amuse themselves for 5 minutes whilst mummy goes upstairs to scream into a pillow!

Oh I love your milestones and I can't wait!

The one that made the most impact for me was when they held their own bottles.

My life changed - no more one screaming baby! :)

And then of course sleeping through and the absolute best best best one?

What a great list! I just laughed out loud about opening the fridge and getting their own snack and "grab me a diet coke too". I can so relate!! Another great one is buckling and unbuckling their own seatbelt! :)

OMJ (as my Ava would say) to #3!!! My 3 met this milestone this summer and I *swear* I heard the angels sing when they did! What's even better is how they can swing for a good HOUR before tiring of it! Holla!!!!

OMG! That pumping themselves on the swing with priceless. LOVE it when they get to that stage.

I hear you on the pumping for the swings. I was beyond excited when my oldest figured that one out.

My favorite? Graduating to showers. Hallelujah.

I can't wait for the solo swinging! Thanks for a great list!

I. Love. It! My boys REFUSE to drink from a bottle (cup only, thanks Mama!), so I'm still waiting on every single one of those...

opening the fridge AND playing alone? Priceless.

Oh yes! The swing is the best! And playing outside without mommy!Learning to potty was great, but better than that is when my twin boys learn to wipe their own BUTT!!! I was so excited when that happened I did a News Alert on my blog!!!
The next big one was bathing themselves!!!

Perfect list!!

We are thinking about attempting to take all 3 (including the 2 year old) to see Winnie the Pooh this weekend. Its only 55 minutes - hoping he can make it!

Only got 1 out of 3 that can pump. ugh!

I'm anxious for them all to be able to ride a 2 wheel bike themselves! all are with training wheels still. Also - washing/rinsing themselves in the bath/shower!

When they can remind you before going to bed that you are on tooth fairy duty that night. Also, when they can drive themselves to practice, church, friends' houses, etc. is nice. Unfortunately, I'm still waiting for the day my 16 yr. old remembers to take out the trash without being reminded. Thanks for taking me back:)

See? This is why I love you! I can't until the Crazies can grab me a Diet Coke! I am looking forward to them showering and brushing their teeth independently, but I'm pretty far off on that one.

One of my twins can let the dog out...a huge accomplishment and it really helps me be even lazier! :-)
